Austerity Woes Make for a Week to be in Opposition

On Monday 23 April 2012 a Guardian newspaper headline read: "Conservatives turn three-point opinion poll lead into eight-point deficit" in a story which illustrated the travails of being in government and not getting the PR quite right - on this occasion over Chancellor George Osborne's Budget.  The poll covering Westminster voting intentions, was conducted for the newspaper by ICM and showed that the Conservatives had slumped to 33 per cent, a fall of six per cent which accounted for nearly all of Labour's gain of five per cent to 41 per cent

Analysts: May Rate Cut in the Bag, Likely a Couple More to Come this Year

All the ingredients for the Australia n central bank to cook up a rate reduction on May 1 are present, economists said, further making a strong case for a cash rate push back on Tuesday, which has been expected and demanded by many local industries. The bond market has reached subdued levels, according to Australia & New Zealand Banking Group (ANZ), while official government figures pointed to the likelihood that inflation for much of the current year would remain within the target band set by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA).

Turkish Police Brace For Huge May Day Rally On 35th Anniversary of Taksim Massacre

Turkish police and government are bracing for massive May Day rallies on Tuesday, with an expected contingent of 14,000 police officers to be deployed in Istanbul to ensure security. The Mayor of Istanbul Hüseyin Avni Mutlu told reporters: “The Istanbul Police Department has taken the necessary measures to ensure a peaceful demonstration that will cause no problems to either demonstrators or other people in the demonstration areas.” Security officials will also be deployed across nearby cities, including Sakarya, Kocaeli and Balıkesir.

Housing Market Retreats in January but Economists Remain Upbeat

The housing market retreated again in the first month of 2012 following its strong showing in December though economists have been upbeat that the rest of the year would witness some form of recovery as investors' confidence regain enough traction.  The Australia n Bureau of Statistics (ABS) reported on Tuesday that financing activities in the sector shrunk by 2.3 percent in January to $20.732 billion, seasonally adjusted, after the rally posted in the previous month. CMC Markets chief market strategist Michael McCarthy told the Australia n Associated Press (AAP) that what was seen in final stretch of 2011 merely showcased the market reaction to the consecutive rate cuts rolled out by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) in November and December.

Aussie ATM Operators Hike Access Fee to $2.50

The new ATM withdrawal fee is now $2.50 from $2, comparison Web site Mozo said, which would boost the income of ATM operators by $600 million. The fee increase came despite assurances from politicians to reduce the cost of accessing their money. The increase was triggered mainly by hike on ATM fees made by two main independent ATM operators outside the major banks.
